Frosted or Acid Etched Glass comprises the techniques of creating a translucent or “frosted” effect on the surface of glass by applying acidic, caustic, or abrasive substances.Acid etching is done using hexafluorosilicic acid which is allowed in strictly controlled factory environments as the process is hazardous.

However, acid etching is much more sought after as the resulting effect is a silvery smooth translucent surface without the rough surface produced by abrasive blasting (or using sand blasting) method. Acid etching is also preferred as finger prints can easily be wiped away over the traditionally sand blasted method.
